Baseball Stays Alive with Win Over Doane

The Mayville State University baseball team avoided elimination from the 2014 NAIA National Tournament by beating Doane College by a final score of 1-0.

Mayville vs. Doane was a battle of defense and pitching. Scott Petry was on the mound for the Comets and pitched a complete game shut-out to pick up the win. In nine innings pitched, he gave up seven hits, zero runs, and struck out three. Petry is now 9-3 on the season with an ERA of 2.90.

Doane pitcher Brandon Stennis was on his way to a complete game no-hit victory, but came up short. Stennis recorded eight innings giving up one hit, one run, and two walks with 12 strikeouts.

Mayville State didn't generate much offense in the ballgame, but they came up big when it mattered most. Spencer Mallonee was the only Comet player to tally a hit. Mallonee doubled to deep right to get things started in the bottom of the ninth inning. T.J. Erickson bunted and reached base on an error which advanced Mallonee to third. Zach Mihic reached base on an intentional walk to load the bases for the Comets and was subbed out by Taylor Skytland who checked in to pinch run. Bryan Jacklitch was the next Comet at the plate and brought home the winning run after reaching first on a walk.

With the victory, the Comets advance in the tournament and will play again on Wednesday, May 14 at 1:00pm. Mayville will square off against Viterbo University.
