Comet football falls to Valley City at home

The Mayville State University Comet football team hosted longtime rival Valley City State University at Jerome Berg Field on Saturday, October 23, 2010. Mayville State wasn't able to pull out a victory, losing by a score of 36-6.

Valley City (4-5) (3-4) was dedicated to running the ball in this game as the Vikings had two 100-yard rushers and compiled over 354 yards on the ground as a team. Derek Elliot led the Viking offense with 211 yards on the ground and one touchdown. Andy Derilus was successful in a back-up role gaining 108 yards and punching it in twice for touchdowns on the ground. Elliot and Derilus helped the Vikings keep the Comet offense off the field for most of the game.

Trent Kosel had an efficient game for the Vikings completing 7 of 12 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Kosel was poised in the pocket on his pass attempts and was able to make accurate passes to his receivers downfield.

The Comet offense struggled to get anything going in the contest with just 116 yards of offense. The Vikings did a great job on defense holding MSU to 57 yards rushing during the game. The Comets' only score came late in the fourth quarter as Tanner Carpenter found Taylor Kunkel on the right side of the end zone with 12 seconds left.

Mayville had some good performances on defense but gave up a few big plays throughout to keep the Viking offense on the field and momentum on the visitor sideline. Clifton Krotz finished with 15 tackles, five for a loss, and forced one fumble while playing multiple positions for the MSU defense.

Dennis Tinitali was right behind Krotz with 14 tackles and also had five for a loss. Tinitali and Krotz did a great job being around the the ball and getting in on the pile in the game.

The Comets (1-7) (0-6) will be in action at home against Dakota State (0-8) (0-6) next Saturday, October 30, 2010 from Jerome Berg Field.
