The Mayville State University football team knew they were going to be facing some tough competition on Saturday when they hit the road to take on No. 23 ranked South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, S.D. The Hardrockers showed that their national ranking was well deserved as they defeated the Comets 58-10.
South Dakota Tech got onto the scoreboard first with a three-play, 83-yard scoring drive to go up 7-0.
The MSU offense would answer back and got onto the board in the second quarter when
Tyler Yamanouchi kicked in an 18-yard field goal for the Comets, but the Hardrockers took a 30-3 lead into halftime.
SD Tech came out just as strong in the second half of the game and put up an additional 28 points in the final two quarters of play for their final score. The Comets got their first and only touchdown of the game in the third quarter when quarterback
Tanner Carpenter capped off a nine-play, 77-yard drive with a touchdown pass to Steven Lopez..
Offensively MSU was led by
Lance Stilborn and Carpenter. Stillborn rushed for 78 yards on the day while Carpenter completed 13-of-33 passes including one for a touchdown. Carpenter's favorite target of the afternoon was
Taylor Elsenheimer. Elsenheimer caught five passes for a total of 65 yards.
Frank Sanzolone and
Victor Redd received three passes and two passes respectively to both contribute an additional 23 passing yards.
On the defensive side of the ball,
Clifton Krotz and
Dennis Tinitali came up big each coming away with nine tackles a piece.
Elliot Alefaio followed close behind with 8 tackles.
The loss drops Mayville State to 1-4 on the season and 0-3 in the Dakota Athletic Conference. The Comets return to action next week as they host Dickinson State University in the 2010 Mayville State University Homecoming.
