Comets fall to Bluehawks in final home volleyball contest

Mayville State University came up short in its final home contest of the 2010 volleyball season on Saturday night, falling to Dickinson State three games to one in a Dakota Athletic Conference matchup at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville.

The Comets came out strong in game number one, playing with precision on both sides of the ball against the conference-leading Bluehawks. Dickinson, who entered the match with an overall record of 17-12 and a conference mark of 11-1, quickly found themselves in a one game to zero hole.

But Dickinson would bounce back strong in game number two and game number three. The Bluehawks caught fire and went on impressive runs to take the second game 25-13 and the third game 25-10.

There was no quit in the Comets though, and MSU would come out fighting in game number four. The Comets battled back after a quick deficit early in the fourth game to get the crowd excited and continued to ride that momentum throughout. After a tough battle, the Comets found themselves with a 21-23 lead and threatening to extend the match.

Dickinson would answer back and to win the serve. DSU then managed to get the final three points of the match to end the Comets' run with a 25-23 victory.

The Comets (4-22, 2-10) will travel to Madison, South Dakota on November 3rd in their final regular season contest of the season against Dakota State University. Dakota State is currently in sixth place in the DAC with a 11-20 overall record and a 4-9 conference mark.

The DAC post-season tournament will begin on November 6th. Dickinson State and Jamestown College are currently sitting atop the league standings with a 12-1 conference record.
