Dakota State spoils MSU Volleyball Homecoming

The Mayville State University volleyball team kicked off the 2010 MSU Homecoming games tonight when they hosted the Dakota State University Trojans at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse. The two teams put together an exciting game before DSU took the match 3-2.

The Comets came out strong in the first set. MSU started off the scoring and didn't look back. The Comets led the entire set up until DSU tied it up at 18-18. The teams traded four points before MSU surged to take set one 25-22.

Set two was almost a virtual replay of the first set. This time it was the Trojans jumping out first and taking the lead. And once again the lead was held until the teams tied up at 18-18. And just like set one, the teams traded four points back and forth to have ties of 18-18, 19-19 and 20-20. But this time it was the Trojans who had the late surge to take the set 25-22.

With the match tied 1-1, set three became an important turning point in the game. And MSU showed that they wanted it more. The Comets put together a dominant performance and took set three 25-12 to take a 2-1 lead in the game.

But Dakota State wasn't going to let MSU start celebrating their homecoming win yet. And once again we saw back to back sets that were eerily similar. The Trojans turned the tables on the Comets and put together a performance that was just as dominating as the Comets' was in set three. Just like set three, set four finished with a 25-12 score, this time in favor of the Trojans.

With the game tied 2-2 the teams went to a decisive set five. But the Trojans decided to play the role of spoiler and handed MSU an upset on their Homecoming. DSU took the fifth set 15-9 to win the game 3-2.

Offensively the Comets had four players reach double digits in the kill column. Ashley Haines put up 13 kills for MSU. Kacie Fortmann and Brittany Olson each had 12 and Nicky Carrison contributed another 10.

Defensively the Comets also had four players reach the double digit mark for digs. Ashley Torgusson had 15, Fortmann had 14, Ariana Odegard had 12, and Brittney Lindgren had 10.
The Comets will hold a scrimmage against the MSU volleyball alumni this Saturday at 10:30 AM as part of the 2010 MSU Homecoming activities.
