Comets fall in season opening weekend

The Mayville State University volleyball team had a tough start to the2010 season over the weekend in Nebraska. The Comets started off the season with a 0-3 loss to Bellevue University before having a close 2-3 loss to Midland Lutheran College.

MSU started off the season on Aug. 20 in Bellevue, Neb. against Bellevue University. The Bruins came out strong, defeating the Comets in three straight sets 25-14, 25-11 and 25-14.

“The girls did a great job of playing together and remaining positive,” head coach Lindsey Kruse said. “I think the offense and defense will come as the season progresses.”

The following night the Comets headed to Fremont, Neb. to take on Midland Lutheran College. It was an evenly matched game but the Warriors came out on top, taking the match 3-2.

Midland came out strong to win the first set 25-9, but the Comets rebounded strong to win the next two sets 28-26 and 25-21. With the match on the line, Midland came back to win a close fourth set 25-23. The final set saw Midland come out on top 15-9.

Coach Kruse said she did see some positive things from the weekend.

“I think we came out a little flat the first match,” Kruse said of her squad. “With that being said, we found ourselves up against some really good competition. Our second match we played I thought we really started to establish our block as well as our offense.”

“We competed for every point and that was what I wanted to see this first weekend out. We are in the early stages of the season and it was great to see our improvements from Friday to Saturday.”

The Comets look to get into the win column as they continue their season next week. They head to Trinity Bible College on Sept. 3 before heading to Sioux Falls, S.D. to participate in the University of Sioux Falls tournament on Sept. 5 and 6.
