The Mayville State University Comet football team played host to the Black Hills State University Yellow Jackets on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at Jerome Berg Field. This game was the Comets' home opener in 2010 and part of the annual Farmers Bowl festivities in Mayville.
The Comets came out strong after an early Yellow Jackets touchdown when junior quarterback Tanner Carpenter found Brandon Kunze in the corner of the end zone with a 22-yard touchdown strike to tie the game at 7-7. Another Yellow Jackets score made the game 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Black Hills took a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter when Daniel Hodgs found Daniel Hancock for his second touchdown of the day. The Comets drove down the field right after that and managed to get a field goal to draw the game back to 21-10. A late touchdown by Black Hills put the halftime score at 28-10.
The Comets didn't back down in the second half playing very hard to keep the game within reach. Early in the fourth quarter, running back Mitch Ford punched in his second touchdown of the year drawing the score to 34-17. Ford then recovered the ensuing onside kick attempt from Tanner Carpenter to give the Comets some momentum in the final quarter.
Black Hills was able to weather the storm and held off the Comets' push for a comeback. The game ended with a final score of 48-17.
Black Hills (3-1) (2-0) came into the game coming off a big 28-25 victory against Jamestown on the road last week and was looking to ride that momentum into their contest with the Comets. The Yellow Jackets relied on the arm of quarterback Drew Hodgs throughout the day. Hodgs had a great game through the air completing 15 of 23 passes for 261 yards and five touchdowns. His favorite target was receiver Daniel Hancock, who caught five passes for 89 yards and three touchdowns.
Freshman running back Bryar DeShanti led the Yellow Jackets on the ground with 16 carries for 86 yards. DeShanti also had two receptions for 71 yards on the day.
Mayville State was led by running back Mitch Ford who ran for 73 yards while gaining 26 yards through the air out of the backfield. Ford added the Comets only rushing touchdown on the day. Tanner Carpenter threw for 110 yards and one touchdown on the afternoon.
Defensively the Comets got a great effort out of senior linebacker Clifton Krotz who recorded 12 tackles, three of which were tackles for a loss. Krotz was in or around the ball all afternoon putting in a great effort defensively.
Freshman defensive back
Dominique Bradley turned in another solid performance on defense for the Comets. Bradley was in on 10 tackles and had two tackles for a loss. Bradley, the DAC defensive player of the week in week 2, had some very loud, hard hits on the Yellow Jackets running backs in the game.
Matthew Bass and Dennis Tintali were behind Krotz and Bradley with 7 tackles each.
Mayville State (1-3, 0-2) will be in action again next Saturday, October 2nd as they travel to Rapid City, South Dakota to take on South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
