VCSU defeats MSU volleyball in Farmers Bowl play

Plenty of fans showed up to the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse to see the Mayville State University volleyball team take on Valley City State University on the sixteenth annual Farmers Bowl weekend. And the Comets and Vikings put on a good show for the crowd. The two teams battled an evenly fought match, which VCSU won 3-1.

The Vikings struck first, taking set one 25-19. But the Comets weren't going to go away very easy. MSU stood its ground and came back to win a tight second set 25-22 to even up the match.

Set three proved to be the most exciting of the evening. The teams traded leads numerous times. But VCSU came out on top 26-24. The Vikings put the game away by taking set four 25-17.

Offensively the Comets were led by Abagail Anderson and Kacie Fortmann. Anderson had 13 kills on the evening and Fortmann contributed 10. Nicky Carrison and Ashley Haines each added an additional six.

Fortmann also stepped up for MSU on the defensive side. She compiled 25 digs for the Comets. Fortmann was followed by Brittney Lindgren with 15, Ashley Torgusson with 13, Ariana Odegard with 11 and Kelsey McDowell with nine.

The Vikings were led by Jasmine Nyx with 16 kills and Mardee Lander with 28 digs.

The loss bring Mayville State to 2-14 overall and 1-3 in Dakota Athletic Conference play.

The Comets continue their conference play next week when they hit the road to take on Dickinson State University on Friday and Minot State University on Saturday.
