Comet volleyball team comes up short in Sioux Falls Classic

The Mayville State University volleyball team headed south this weekend to take part in the USF Classic in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Comets went 0-4 in the non-conference matches.

MSU started off the weekend with a Friday afternoon match against Mid America University. The game was tightly matched, with the Comets taking the first set 28-26. But Mid America quickly answered, winning the next two sets 25-16 and 25-23. The close play continued as Mayville State took set four 25-20, but the Pioneers took the match winning 15-5 in set five.

The Comets second contest of the weekend paired them against Dordt College. The Defenders came out strong, putting MSU away in three sets 25-23, 25-20, and 25-16.

In the first match against Mid America, the Comets were led by senior Ashley Haines with 13 kills and by Ashley Torgusson with 25 digs.

Against Dordt College, Kacie Fortmann led the way with 11 kills and 18 digs

The second day of the USF Classic saw MSU take on Briar Cliff University. The Comets fell to BCU 19-25, 23-25, 17-25. Defensively the Comets were led by Ashley Torgusson with 22 digs.

The final match featured MSU and the home team University of Sioux Falls. The Comets fell in the first two sets 18-25, 8-25 but rebounded to take the third set 25-22. But the Cougars were too much and took the match in set four 25-21. Once again the Comets were led by Kacie Fortmann with 11 kills and 13 digs.
