Homecoming 2011 in Mayville, North Dakota had a lot going on for the current students, alumni, faculty, and other friends of the Comet family. The Comet football team hosted rival Valley City State University at Jerome Berg Field on October 8, 2011 at 2:00 p.m.
The Vikings got out to a solid offensive start with a six minute drive to open the game. The drive sputtered in the red zone as the Comet defense held them to just a field goal. After a failed attempt at a fake punt by the Comets the Viking offense got back to work offensively. Quarterback Tommy Zinke found LeTheo Proctor for one of his five total touchdowns as the Vikings jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead.
The Comet offense responded quickly as
Jake McLain threw a deep ball up to
Taylor Kunkel on the Comets first play of the ensuing drive. A blocked extra point left the game at 10-6 in favor of Valley City.
Proctor put his mark on the game in the second quarter. The receiver from Anchorage, Alaska scored three more touchdowns before the half to lead the Vikings to a 31-6 halftime lead.
After a turnover on the Comets opening drive of the second half Zinke found Ken Eliacin for another touchdown as the Vikings looked to put the game away for good. Proctor added another receiving touchdown in the third quarter for his fourth through the air, and fifth in the game.
The Comets got their offense on track in the fourth quarter where they outscored the Vikings 14-7 and saw a pair of rushing touchdowns.
James McKinney found his way into the end zone with less than nine minutes left.
Dominique Bradley added the other score on the ground on an impressive run to the left side.
Bradley's touchdown was set up by a great defensive play by
Ben Rayfield. Rayfield, the senior from Mountain Home, ID blocked a Valley City punt to give the Comets great field position.
In the end the Vikings ended up on top by a score of 52-20 to spoil the Homecoming day game between the rivals. The Comets will get another shot at the Vikings later in the season when they travel to Valley City on October, 29 2011.
Proctor was definitely the spark behind the Viking offense. The receiver finished with five catches for 159 yards and four touchdowns. Proctor had just the one carry out of a version of the Wildcat offense for a two yard touchdown rush. AJ Pfiefer led the Vikings on the ground with 68 yards on 17 carries. Trevor Goertz added 53 yards and one touchdown on nine carries in the rushing game as well.
The Comets were led by Bradley offensively as he earned 135 yards on the ground and the one touchdown. McLain and
Daven Arredondo followed him with 42 yards each. McKinney had 12 yards along with his touchdown. Receivers were led by
Taylor Kunkel with 57 yards including his touchdown.
Victor Redd followed Kunked with 35 yards on three catches.
Josh Jefferies led the Comets with tackles in the game. Jefferies finished with 12 tackles in the game including five unassisted and 2.5 for a loss.
Jacob Grosz and
Adam Popple were next in line as they each finished with 11 tackles for the Comet defense.
Mayville State University will play in Jamestown next weekend for their rematch with the Jimmies. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
