Comet football loses to #17 ranked Valley City; Play Trinity Bible next week

The Mayville State University football team played their second game of the 2012 regular season with a match-up against longtime rival Valley City State University on Saturday, September 8th, 2012 in Valley City, North Dakota. After a scrimmage with Concordia and game against Dakota College of Bottineau, Derek Schlieve and the rest of the Comets were ready to officially kick off the season.

The Vikings, ranked #17 in the NAIA national football poll jumped out to an early lead ahead 17-0 in the second quarter. Mayville State found the endzone for the first time of the season when senior quarterback Tanner Carpenter punched in a short touchdown run to cap off an eight play drive.  On the ensuing kickoff Tyler Kosel fielded the ball and took it all the way back for another Vikings score giving them the lead and a lot of momentum.

The Vikings added another touchdown in the third quarter to add to the lead. After another Viking touchdown in the fourth quarter, Carpenter did find Dantrel Horn in the back of the endzone on a 16 yard pass for his first touchdown through the air on the year. The Vikings ended up winning the contest by a final score of 38-13.

Carpenter finished the game with 50 yards through the air on seven completions with the one touchdown. He also added the only rushing touchdown of the day for Mayville State. Carpenter also took care of punting the ball with five punts with an average of 33.6 yards a punt.

Dominique Bradley led the team in rushing with 103 yards on 26 carries. Bradley also returned two kicks gaining 51 yards to lead the team.

Defensively the Comets were led by Jason Holmes with eight tackles. Rashad Flanders and Justin Popovich followed with five tackles each. Jacob Grosz came away with the only interception of the day to go along with his four tackles. Grosz also had 1.5 tackles for a loss to lead the team.

Mayville State did recover two fumbles in the game as Jason Holmes and Jerril Jenkins gained control of a loose ball during the game.

Mayville State will be eager to get back on field next week when they travel to Ellendale, North Dakota to take on Trinity Bible College. The Comets (1-1) defeated Trinity Bible with an emphatic 65-6 victory last year in Mayville. The Lions (1-1) are coming off a big win (41-24) over Cole College on Monday, Sepetmeber 3rd, 2012.The game is set to start at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 15th, 2012.
