Volleyball Dominant in Sweep of Dakota Wesleyan

MAYVILLE, N.D. – October 5, 2013: The Mayville State volleyball team made quick work of Dakota Wesleyan sweeping the Tigers 25-10, 25-16, 25-16 for its 11th win of the season Saturday afternoon at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse. The Comets made a successful bounce back after their loss to Dickinson State last Tuesday.

Mayville State rushed out to sizeable leads in the first two sets to set the tone of the match. With sophomore Remington Werner leading the team in kills with 11 the rest of the team followed her lead and balanced out the offense. Werner was the only player with 10+ kills in the match, but seven other players accounted for kills in the three set sweep.

Dakota Wesleyan played tough at the start of the third set but ran out of gas before the inevitable defeat. The Tigers cut the Comets lead to 17-16 before an 8-0 spurt by Mayville state ended the match with Werner picking up the final kill. Katie Wangberg served the final eight points of the match for Mayville State.

The Comets were dominant in all facets of the match. MSU outhit Dakota Wesleyan .310 to .000 and recorded more kills, digs, and service aces. Werner's match-high 11 kills was complimented with a .429 attack percentage. Wangberg added five kills, hitting .500, as well as recording 19 assists and six digs.

The Comets (11-13 overall, 3-1 North Star) will continue their five-match homestand next Tuesday with Presentation College at 7 p.m. at the Lewey Lee Fieldhouse. Mayville State is currently in second place in the NSAA.
