MAYVILLE, N.D. – September 18, 2013: The Comet volleyball team hosted the University of Jamestown in their first action in the North Star Athletic Association in Mayville, North Dakota on Wednesday night. The Comets came up short in an exciting, back-and-forth contest 3-2. Four out of the five sets were within five points, so the match was very close throughout.
Katie Wangberg had a volleyball version of a triple-double with 33 assists, 13 kills and 13 digs. She was all over the floor and did a great job keeping the Comets in the game.
The Comets were led in kills by
Josette Glatt, who finished with 13 in the game. Glatt also recorded five blocks for the Comets.
Freshman
Paige O'Connor led the defense with 34 digs in the match. Five Comets finished with 10+ digs with
Betsy Smith recording 22,
Sydney Boom with 15, and Katie Kollness with 10 to go along with O'Connor and Wangberg.
Remington Werner and
Kaitlyn Timian were attacking the net aggressively as well with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
After losing the first set 25-22 the Comets fought back to win the next two sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-21. The Jimmies came out strong in the fourth game to tie it up with a 25-15. The final set was ready to go and the teams had been battling for almost two hours at this point. Jamestown took the lead early in the fifth set and never looked back as they won the set 15-10 and the match 3-2.
Mayville State University (6-12, 0-1) will be on the road once again this weekend to South Dakota. The Comets play Dakota State University on Friday in Madison, SD and follow it up against Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD on Saturday. The Comets will be looking to pick up their first NSAA victories.
