The Comets Women's Basketball team opened with a number of new players and a turbo-charged philosophy, and held off a late push by the University of Brandon to win their season opener 92-80.
With 6 seniors and 4 starters graduating from last year's team, this year's Comets will look noticeably different. 5 freshmen played considerable mintues for the Comets in this game. Mayville State's offensive philosophy remained, aggressively attacking the basket for shots in the paint or kickouts for 3 point attempts. This year's team is also showing a more aggressive front defensively with pressure defense all over the half court. The frenetic pace was on full display in the season opener against the University of Brandown. The Comets forced 18 turnovers and hit 7 3 pointers in the first half as they raced out to a 53-37 lead. The pace was just as fast in the second half, but the shots weren't falling at the same rate for the Comets. However, their defensive pressure prevented any comeback attempts from Brandon. The lead was at 20 points for most of the second half until a late Brandon rally made the final score 92-80 in favor of Mayville State.
Andi Gayner had a fantastic start to her college career, as she led the Comets with 15 points and 9 rebounds.
Alyssa Blair shared scoring honors with 15, including 4 3 pointers.
Liza Hoglo chipped in 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, and
Joelle Ertl also made a strong collegiate debut with 11 points, 3 assists and 5 steals.
The Comets are now 1-0, with a game against perennial contender Concordia (Neb.) on Halloween at the Lewy Lee. Tipoff is at 700 pm.
