The Comets football team produced a strong effort in their last game of the season, but it wasn't enough to defeat Jamestown.
The first quarter was a rough one for the Comets, as 2 early turnovers gave Jamestown very good field position on multiple drives. The Jimmies broke through twice late in the first on Beau Erikkson touchdown passes. Both defenses clamped down in the 2nd quarter, the highlight was
Travis Ahlgren blocking a Jamestown punt and
Aaron Johnson scooping up the ball and rumbling to the end zone, only to be nullifed by a Illegal Block penalty. The only scoring was a short FG by Jamestown, which made the halftime score 17-0. Jamestown marched down the field on the first possession of the third quarter and scored on a 4 yard Touchdown pass. The Comets were unable to convert on a 4th and goal at the Jimmies 1 yard line, and entered the 4th quarter down 24-0.
Will Ervin picked off a Jamestown pass and returned it 41 yards to the Jimmies 19.
John Poppe found
Dantrel Horne from 8 yards out to put the Comets on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, the Comets were unable to find the end zone after that, and fell to the Jimmies 24-6.
Poppe completed 27 of 39 passes for 236 yards and a TD. 15 of those passes were caught by
Lance Jackson for 138 yards, and he finished the season with exactly 1,000 receiving yards. Ahlgren added 10 tackles to go along with his blocked punt, and
Jacob Grosz recorded 8 tackles and an interception.
The Comets finish the season with a 2-9 record.
