The Comets Men's Basketball team traveled to South Dakota to battle two more highly regarded teams.
First on the docket was the #6 ranked Bellevue Bruins. The Comets were plagued by fouls in the first half, but held tough only down 41-34. The Comets continued to play strong in the second half, but 32 total Comet fouls sent the Bruins to the line 40 times. That was a margin too difficult to overcome as Bellevue won 84-71.
A.B. Najee led the Comets in scoring with 20 points, followed closely by
Jamal Branco with 18.
Chuck Robinson contributed 13 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks, while
Josh DeWitt dished out 6 assists.
On Saturday the Comets matched up against the tournament hosts, Dakota Wesleyan. The Tigers received votes in the Preseason Top 25 poll and opened their season with 3 strong victories, so the Comets were going to have their hands full. The Comets did not back down in the first half, and after 20 minutes of strong basketball Mayville State was only down 1 point. Unfortunately, nothing went right in the second half and the Tigers pulled away for a convincing 82-51 win. Robinson paced the Comets with 18 points and 7 rebounds, Branco collected 6 assists, and
Darnell Landon added 3 steals.
The Comets record now stands at 1-3, and they're back at the Lewy Lee with two games against Silver Lake College on Friday and Saturday.
