The Comets Women's Basketball team squeezed in two games this weekend, first traveling to Mankato to face the Bethany Lutheran Vikings, then raced back to the Lewy Lee to host the Johnson & Wales Wildcats.
The Comets methodically worked their way to a double-digit lead against the Vikings with a balanced offensive attack. The Vikings were able to stay relatively even with the Comets the last 10 minutes of the half with the halftime score MSU 43, Bethany 30. Another good run to start the second half boosted the Comets' lead to 24 at one point. The Vikings chipped away at the lead towards the end of the game, but Mayville State's lead was never in jeopardy as they won 86-71.
Jenna Lundon led all scorers with 27 points, including 6 3-point bombs.
Liza Hoglo had an outstanding all-around game with 19 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.
Andi Gayner went 7 of 8 from the field to contribute 14 points, and
Joelle Ertl added 3 assists and 3 steals.
The Comets had to come back from Mankato and get ready to play Johnson & Wales the next night. Whether it was the quick turnaround or other factors, the start could not have gone any worse for the Comets. The Wildcats scored the first 10 points of the game and led 12-2 after 5 minutes of play. The Comets were able to pull themselves off the floor and battle back to take a 2 point lead going into the half. Mayville State led throughout the second half, but were never able to manage a big run against the pesky Wildcats, eventually winning 76-70.
Gayner led all scorers with 25 points, followed by Lundon with 20 and Hoglo with 19. Hoglo also added 14 rebounds and 6 assists.
The two victories put the Comets at the top of the NSAA Conference with a 7-3 record. Mayville State continues their busy December with an exhibition contest against NDSU on Monday evening.
