The Comets traveled down to Ellendale to battle Trinity Bible College. Trinity opened the scoring with a 30 yard TD pass by Trevor Taylor. The Comets roared back led by
Rashad Flanders, who ripped off 20 and 80 yard TD runs in the first quarter, opening up a 12-7 lead. Taylor found the end zone in the second with a 15 yard TD strike to Daniel Rivera to take a 13-12 lead going into halftime.
Brogan Thoren returned a Taylor pass 90 yards to take back the lead 18-13 early in the third quarter. Taylor came back to score on a 2 yard sneak as Trinity went back on top 20-18. The Comets came right back on the next drive, as
John Poppe tossed a 11 yard TD pass to
Lance Jackson to give the Comets a 25-18 lead. Flanders ensured the Comets wouldn't relinquish that lead with his third rushing touchdown of the day, this time a 71 yard burst.
Octavius Hayes opened the 4th quarter with a 2 yard run to make the score 39-20. Trinity wouldn't give up, as Taylor threw 2 more TD passes to make the score 39-32. Trinity's PAT was blocked and Will Irvin returned it for 2 points, making it a 2 possession game. Flanders iced the victory with a 47 yard touchdown run, his fourth of the day, making the final score 47-34.
Offensively, the Comets ground out 212 rushing yards, and the defense supplied 7 Sacks and forced four turnovers. Flanders rushed 28 times for 235 yards and 4 touchdowns, and also added an 80 yard punt return. Jackson caught 4 passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. On the defensive side, Thoren added 2 sacks with his INT TD return,
Dusty Delk also recorded 2 sacks, and
Jacob Grosz led the team with 14 tackles. Trevor Taylor of Trinity passed for 385 yards and 4 touchdowns.
The Comets are now 1-2 on the season, and are back again on the road this weekend as they travel to Lawrence, Kansas to take on Haskell University.
