The Mayville State Football team hosted Dakota State looking for a win to match Dickinson State at the top of the NSAA. The Trojans used a number of big 4
th quarter plays to escape with a 28-21 win.
The Comets had a big kickoff return from
Jason Holmes to get into prime field position. However a fumble at the Trojan 22 derailed the drive. Dakota State marched down the field and Jacob Giles finished the drive with a 2 yard TD dive. Later in the quarter, the Comets churned out an 11 play 55 yard drive which ended in a
Jerril Jenkins 1 yard TD run. After one quarter the score was tied 7-7. In the second quarter, the Trojans used a blocked FG and a 75 yard Giles to Preston Nordling to get deep into Comet territory. Giles finished off the drive by finding Austin Opdahl in the corner of the end zone to regain the lead 13-7. Mayville State came right back, as

Jacob Robbins for a 47 yard pitch and catch.
Miguel Vega's PAT made the score 14-13 Comets at half.
Both defenses stiffened in the third quarter as neither team scored, leaving the score 14-13 with Dakota State driving going into the fourth. Giles opened the fourth quarter with his 2
nd TD run of the game, giving the Trojans a 19-14 lead. Â Once again the Comets respond and once again it's Blake to Robbins, this time for 51 yards, making the score 21-19. Dakota State comes right back with a 60 yard kickoff return from Daveon Banks which led to a 27 yard Nic Behrens field goal to take a 1 point lead 22-21. The Comets had to punt on the ensuing drive, but were able to pin Dakota State at their own 3. On 3
rd and 3 from the 10 Robert Johnson broke off a 79 yard run to get the Trojans in the red zone. Johnson finished the drive with a 4 yard TD plunge, making the score 28-21 with just over seven minutes remaining. This time the Comets couldn't respond, and Dakota State holds on to win 28-21.
For the Comets, Blake threw for 286 yards and 2 scores,
Martin Stafford rushed for 88 yards and Robbins caught 8 balls for 152 and 2 scores. Defensively,
Ryan Henderson led the team with 12 tackles.
Mayville State's record now stands at 5-3, 3-2 in the NSAA, with a chance to win a share of the NSAA Title by defeating Dickinson State next week.
