Comets MBB Fall Short to #24 Dakota Wesleyan

Box Score The Comets Men's Basketball team opened their season by hosting last year's National Championship Finalist, the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers. In a closely-contested battle, the Tigers were able to escape with a 71-67 victory.

With a couple Comet starters battling early foul trouble, the Tigers were able to slowly grind to a six point lead eight minutes in. Mayville State showed their depth by battling back to tie things up multiple times. However, Dakota Wesleyan used a 15-8 run at the end of the first half to stretch their lead to 44-33. Both teams shot well in the first half, but the Tigers torrid 58% (6-13 from deep) shooting was the difference.

Playing catchup, the Comets stormed to a 13-4 run to open the second half to pull within 2 with 16 minutes left to play. However, the Tigers were able to bump the lead back up to 10 with an 8-0 spurt of their own. The process repeated itself multiple times as the game progressed, the Comets would claw within one possession, then the Tigers would go on a mini run to keep Mayville State at bay. The Comets were down three with under a minute left and were able to prevent the Tigers from scoring, giving them a chance to tie. Mayville State was able to get a good look from a corner 3 with 14 seconds left, but it fell just short. The Tigers were able to hit a free throw to ice the game, making the final 71-67.

Chuck Robinson led a balanced Comet attack with 12 points, A.B. Najee added 11 ponts while grabbing 8 boards, and Jamal Branco and Garek Droog both chipped in 10 points. Darnell Landon dished out 6 assists and collected 2 steals. For the Tigers, Jason Spicer led all scorers with 21 points while Jade Miller recorded 18.

The loss drops the Comets to 0-1 for the season. Mayville State is back in action against Viterbo on Halloween, tipoff is at 4pm.
