Comets MBB Ice-Cold Start Ends with Loss to Viterbo

Box Score The Comets Men's Basketball Team started their NSAA Conference season started by hosting Viterbo. Mayville State couldn't overcome cold shooting enroute to a 68-59 defeat.

Neither team's offensive could get untracked early, as the first points weren't scored until 5 minutes in. While the V-Hawks offense showed signs of like, the Comets first FG came with 12:47 left in the first half. Mayville State's offense continued to stagnate as Viterbo went on the 21-4 run to open up a 20 point lead late in the first. The Comets were able to chip away at the lead but still trailed by 13 at the half, 35-22.

The V-Hawks opened the second half with an 11-2 run to boost the lead back to 20, and were able to maintain that through most of the second half. The Comets found some success putting five guards on the floor and finally getting some 3 pointers to drop, but it was too little, too late as they fell to Viterbo 68-59.

As a team, the Comets only shot 40% from the field and 28% from behind the arc. The V-Hawks were able to control the boards as well, corralling 33 total rebounds to the Comets 25. Jamal Branco led the Comets with 11 points and Chuck Robinson added 5 rebounds. Viterbo's Pete Drummond led all scorers with 18 points, followed by Jake Bamke with 13 and Dakota Lindgren with 10. Erik Englestad grabbed 9 rebounds.

The loss drops the Comets to 0-2 on the season, 0-1 in the NSAA. Viterbo salvages a conference split for the weekend, and stand at 1-1 overall and in conference.
