Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball team looked to salvage a split at the Cattle Classic against the Doane Tigers. Unfortunately, the Comets were unable to overcome a rough 2nd quarter in an 84-72 defeat.
Both offenses were humming in the first quarter, as the teams combined for 44 points. The Tigers held a seven point lead late in the first but the Comets scored the last five points of the quarter to get within two at 23-21. Doane ripped off eight straight points to open the 2nd, and added an 11-4 run later in the quarter to stretch their lead out to 50-36 at half. The 3rd quarter was evenly played with neither team able to get on a roll, and with 10 minutes left Doane was ahead 71-55. The fourth quarter played out much like the third, with Doane never allowing the Comets to chip away at the lead, and the final score was 84-72. The 27-15 2nd quarter made the difference, as the two teams played even in the other three quarters. The Tigers went 27/46 (59%) from inside the arc and hit 15/18 free throws.Â
Three Comets shared scoring honors with 20 points apiece,
Joelle Ertl,
Liza Hoglo and
Jenna Lundon. Hoglo also pulled down 16 rebounds and
Alexia Olson added 11 boards.Â
The Comets record now stands at 4-2. Mayville State will travel to Iowa next weekend to battle Northwestern and Dordt.
