In Friday's game, against Clarke, the Comets were a little sloppy with the ball (10 turnovers), but canned 7 3-pointers and shot 50% overall from the field to jump ahead at halftime 42-35. The second half could not have gone worse for the Comets, as their shooting percentage plummeted to 30% while allowing the Crusaders to shoot a sizzling 61%. Clarke was able to reclaim the lead midway through the 3rd quarter and pulled away in the fourth for a 90-72 win.
Jenna Lundon led the Comets with 16 points, followed by
Liza Hoglo with 13,
Joelle Ertl added 12 and
Karleigh Weber chipped in 11.
Andi Gayner hauled down 13 rebounds as well.
The Comets looked to rebound against Ashford on Saturday. The Saints slowed the pace of the game way down, as there were 20 less possessions in the game than a typical Mayville State game. The Comets were efficient in the first quarter and grabbed an early 18-11 lead after one quarter. Ashford turned the tables in the second, as they connected on five treys to take a slim 31-30 lead into halftime. Mayville State came out strong in the third as they wrested the lead back behind 6 points each from Hoglo and
Kendra Heier and led 47-43 with 10 minutes left. The Saints managed to tie the game with 23 seconds left, but Hoglo managed to get to the free throw line and hit the game winner, as the Comets escaped with a 57-56 win. Hoglo and Gayner combined for 34 points and 13 rebounds in the victory.
The split gives the Comets an overall record of 7-5. Mayville State has one more game before Christmas break, as they host Minnesota Morris on 12/18.
