The Comets Women's Basketball team finished their regular season home schedule against the Presentation College Saints. The Comets continued their "Coins for a Cure" fundraising campaign on Saturday, but it was their performance from the charity stripe that sealed a win over the Saints.
Mayville State started ice-cold from the field, shooting only 30% in the first half including only hitting 3/16 from deep. In addition, the Comets were a little careless, as they committed 12 turnovers in the half. In spite of those numbers, the Comets clung to a 39-38 halftime lead on the strength of a sterling 16/18 performance from the free throw line. The lid was rermoved from the basket in the 2nd half, as Mayville State connected on 7 of 15 3-pointers while still getting to the free throw line. The Comets aggressive approach led to a 40-10 free throw difference, which was the primary factor in the 91-83 victory. Mayville State also held a 51-37 advantage on the boards, including 19 offense rebounds - a number of those ultimately led to all those free throws.
Liza Hoglo led four Comets in double figures with 20. She also hauled down 13 rebounds.
Joelle Ertl recorded 18 points and 4 assists,
Andi Gayner added 16 points and collected 13 rebounds, and
Alyssa Lentner scored 11 points and blocked 2 shots.
The win boosts the Comets record to 16-6 overall and 5-3 in the North Star. Mayville State hits the road next week with their final two conference games, starting in Valley City on Wednesday, tipoff @ 530.
