The Comets Women's Basketball team looked to build momentum for the upcoming NSAA tournament by battling the current top 2 teams, first up were the Valley City State Vikings.
The first half of the game was all defense, as the Comets only managed to shoot 23% from the field, but held Valley to an even worse 17%. Mayville State continued to hit the boards and get to the line, as they held a 25-20 edge in rebounds and 11-3 advantage in free throw attempts. The combination of factors allowed the Comets to hold an 18-14 lead at half. Â Both teams' offenses got untracked in the second half, especially from 3 as both teams combined to shoot 11/25 from the arc. While the Vikings were able to chip away at the lead, they were never able to regain it, and the Comets hit enough free throws towards the end to escape with a 60-56 win.
Liza Hoglo had a fantastic all-around game, scoring 23 points, grabbing 8 rebounds and handing out 5 assists.
Andi Gayner notched her 6th double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds while also collecting 3 steals.Â
The victory boosts the Comet's record to 17-6 overall, 6-3 in conference. Mayville State finishes up the regular season against the 11th ranked Jamestown Jimmies, tipoff @ 4pm.
