The Comets Men's Basketball team took to the road looking to extend a four game winning streak by playing the team that launched the streak, the Valley City State Vikings.
Mayville State smothered the Vikings in the early going, only allowing 3 points in the first 12 minutes. This defensive pressure led to an early 20 point lead and a 13 point cushion at halftime, 32-19. The Comets dominated the glass, outrebounding the Valley City 26-10 and held them to under 30% shooting. The second half opened with an 180 degree swing, as the Vikings outscored the Comets 20-6 to briefly retake the lead. Mayville State responded with a 21-3 run to regain a lead they would not relinquish, ultimately winning 68-59.
The Comets maintained their rebounding edge, tallying 50 rebounds to the Vikings 34. Three Comets each collected 10 rebounds -
Chuck Robinson,
Jordan Villebrun and
Jamal Branco.
A.B. Najee led Mayville State in scoring with 14,
Michael Lindsay added 13, with Robinson contributed 12 points and 4 blocks and Branco dishing out 6 assists as well.
The Comets now stand at 17-9, 5-4 in the North Star Conference. Mayville State wraps up the regular season with a game against arch-rival Jamestown, tipoff @ 6pm.
