The Comets Men's Basketball team opened the 2nd half of North Star play looking to avenge an opening loss to Dickinson State Saturday night.
The first half could not have started out much worse for the Comets, as they only managed 32% from the field while allowing the Bluehawks to hit 48% to fall behind 24-34. The second half started out much like the half as the deficit ballooned to 19 points 8 minutes in. It appeared to be all but over for Mayville State. The Comets then proceeded to score the next SIXTEEN points to pull with 3! The Comets were never able to take the lead, as the Bluehawks had a response for every score. With 6 seconds left, the Comets were down three and had the ball.
Michael Lindsay was able to get off a contested 3 point shot just before the horn and BURIED it to tie the game! In overtime, neither team was able to get untracked from an offensive standpoint other than
Jamal Branco, who drove to the basket at will and scored 5 of the Comets 7 points. At the end, the Bluehawks got a decent look on a corner 3 but couldn't convert leading to Double OT. Mayville State got out to a blazing start, scoring 9 points in the first two minutes to take an 85-80 lead. A 3/10 performance from the foul line made things way too exciting towards the end, but the Comets held off the Bluehawks 88-85.
Chuck Robinson scored 18 to lead a balanced attack. Lindsay and Branco each added 16, with Lindsay also grabbing 11 boards and Branco dishing out 5 assists.
A.B. Najee and
David Olson each made 11 to round out 5 Comets in double figures.
The win boosts Mayville State's record to 14-9 overall, 2-4 in the NSAA. Dakota State comes into town Wednesday the 11th, tipoff is @ 730.
