On Saturday, the Comets Women's Basketball team hosted the Dickinson State Bluehawks in a critical North Star Conference game.
The Bluehawks opened on fire from mid-range, while the Comets had trouble finding the hoop from deep. The Comets were able to get a number of Bluehawks into foul trouble and converted their free throws at a high clip to stay close. Mayville State went on a 20-8 run at the end of the first half to pull ahead 36-32. The Comets were able to hold onto their lead throughout the second half, even expanding it to 12 at one point, and prevented any lasting run by continuing to hit their free throws, ultimately winning 76-71. Mayville state went 24/29 from the FT line while Dickinson only made 8/14, proving to be the decisive edge to the game.
Andi Gayner set a new career high in the game by pouring in 36 points, including 14/17 from the FT line! She also pulled down 11 rebounds for her 4th double-double of the season.
Jenna Lundon added 15 points and 3 steals,
Liza Hoglo returned from injury to chip in 12 points, and
Joelle Ertl dished out 5 assists.
The win gives the Comets a 14-6 overall record, 3-3 in the North Star. Dakota State comes to the Lewy Lee on Wednesday, February 11th, tipoff @ 530.
