The Comets Softball team hosted the Dakota State Trojans for a pair over doubleheaders over the weekend.
In Game one, the Comets struck first with a run in the first and extended their lead to 3-0 in the fifth. However, the Trojans exploded for five runs in the sixth and tacked on an insurance run in the seventh to win 6-3.
Nina Gurgian homered and doubled in the game, and
Danielle Sheridan also hit one out to lead the Comets attack. Game two started with Dakota State opening the game with a run. Mayville State took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth with the Trojans eventually knotting the game in the top of the sixth at three. The Comets pushed across two in the bottom of the sixth and held on to win 5-3.
Haley Kravetz pitched two scoreless innings to claim the win,
Daisy Macias recorded two hits and drove in two, and Gurgian went 3 for 3 at the plate.
In Game three, the Trojans again opened strong by scoring three runs. The Comets bats were alive early as they managed seven runs in the first four innings to take a 7-5 lead. However, the wheels came flying off for the Comets the next three innings, as Dakota State plated 15 runs to win decisively 20-8. Gurgian continued her strong play with a 3 for 4 performance which included three RBI and a home run while
Felicia Gonzales had a 2 for 4 game. In the finale, the Comets scored three in the second, and that was enough as Gonzales shut down the Trojans offense, and the Comets bats rolled in the fourth inning as they plated six more and won 10-2. Gonzales went the distance to get the win, while
Tiffany Soria went 3 for 3 with 2 RBI.
The Comets' record now stands at 6-24, and 5-9 in the conference. Next up is a doubleheader against Valley City State on the 22nd.
