The Comets opened conference play with a pair of doubleheaders against the Presentation Saints. Game one was a pitcher's duel, as
Monica Gomez went the distance for the Comets, allowing only two runs on six hits. Unfortunately, Presentation's Kayla Reynolds was even better, tossing a six hit shutout for a 2-0 Saints victory.
Kiana Ishikawa and
Megan Cole each had two hits for Mayville State. Game two looked like more of the same as the Comets clung to a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth. Mayville State's offense got untracked, scoring two runs in the sixth and seventh to win 5-2.
Felicia Gonzales also pitched a complete game for the Comets, scattering seven hits and two runs. Gonzales helped herself on the offensive end as well, going 2 for 3 with a double and RBI, and Ishikawa rapped two more hits and scored twice.
The Comets and Saints were back at it the next day for two more games. Both offenses were dialed in early, and Mayville State pushed across four runs in the fourth to take a 6-5 lead. The Saints reclaimed the lead in the bottom half of the inning and the Comets were unable to add any more runs and lost 8-6.
Nina Gurgian went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and
Danielle Sheridan matched that figure to pace the Comets offense. Game two got out to an ominous start as the Saints exploded for six runs in the first inning. The Comets cut into the lead in the fourth, scoring four runs to close to 6-4. Presentation tacked on 2 more runs in the bottom half of the inning to lead 8-4. Mayville State was able to score three times in the seventh, but just fell short of a comeback win, falling 8-7.
Daisy Macias clubbed her second home run of the season, while Gomez and
Tiffany Soria contributed two RBI apiece.
The Comets hosted a doubleheader against the Valley City State Vikings on Wednesday. The game was tied at one after four innings, but the Vikings blew open the game with seven runs in the fifth to cruise to an 11-4 victory. Gurgian and Soria each hit solo shots to lead the Comets attack. The bats came alive in game two for the Comets, as they raced out to a 7-2 lead after two innings, then added five more in the fourth to win handily 12-3.
Haley Kravetz picked up the win, as she only allowed three runs over five innings. Soria had a huge game for the Comets, as she blasted two HRs and drove in six runs.
Megan Rabe picked up two hits, two runs and two RBI in the win.
The Comets record now stands at 3-19, 2-4 in the North Star. The Comets travel to Dickinson for a pair of doubleheaders against the Bluehawks this weekend.
