The Comets Football team opened their NSAA season by hosting Presentation College. In a wild game that featured 1042 total yards and 104 total points, the Comets struck the final blow in a 56-48 victory.
Mayville State struck first with a 48 yard pitch and catch from
Andrew Blake to
Will Simpson. After stifling the Comets on 4th down deep in their own territory, the Saints tied up the game on a 7 yard Hayden Zenner run. Later in the first, Jerome Mayfield broke free and caught a 63 yard bomb from Austin Eggl to take the lead 14-7. Facing a 2nd and 28 after multiple penalties, Blake found
Chris Mayes free in the seam and Mayes rumbled for a 65 yard touchdown. A failed 2-point conversion prevented a tie, and the first quarter ended with Presentation up 14-13.
A fumbled punt snap early in the 2nd quarter gave Mayville State the ball on the Saints 12 yard line. Three plays later,
Jerril Jenkins found the end zone from 3 yards out, and Blake picked up a bad PAT snap and found Fernando Flores for 2 pts to give the Comets a 21-14 lead. Presentation stormed back with 2 long, productive drives each ending with a Zenner TD run to take a 27-21 lead with 1:47 to go. That was enough time for
Jordan Ares to drive the Comets down the field and find
L.J. McMorris from 16 yards to take a one point lead into halftime.
Presentation ripped off a number of big plays to open the second half and appeared to take control. Zenner scored his fourth TD on a 43 yard run. After a Comets punt, Eggl found Anthony Bricker for 42 yards to open up a 41-28 lead. The Comets marched right back down the field and Jenkins found paydirt from 15 yards out to pull within a TD. After a Saints punt, Mayville State ripped off another 65 yard scoring drive, finished by a
Andrew Blake to
Dantrel Horne 9 yard TD strike, and the game was tied once again at 41.
Presentation drew first blood in the fourth off a weaving 34 yard pitch and catch from Eggl to Bricker. Blake went back to work and took the Comets on a 9 play, 82 yard drive and found
Jacob Robbins for a 16 yard TD pass. An offsides penalty gave the Comets incentive to go for 2 and Ares found
Desmond Earles to take a 49-48 lead. Capitalizing on a Saints fumble, Blake and Robbins hooked up again, this time from 37 yards to open up a 56-48 lead. With 2 minutes left, the Saints had to throw and
Joe Guidry picked off a Saints pass to seal the win.
Blake had a career day with 323 yards and five touchdowns. Jenkins rushed for 73 yards and 2 scores, Robbins caught 6 balls for 101 yards and 2 TDs, and
Jason Holmes collected 11 tackles and picked off a pass. For the Saints, Eggl went for 247 and 3 TDs, Zenner rushed for 188 yards and 4 scores, Mayfield piled up 134 yards and a TD, and Adail Froome added 7 tackles and a sack.
The win gives the Comets a 3-1 overall record, 1-0 in the NSAA. Mayville State takes on Valley City State next week.
