Jamestown volleyball has always been amongst the toughest competitors in their conference. Because of this, teams prepare for their strengths. The Comets have been switching up their own lineup for the entire season thus far, but have not done anything quite as abrupt as in this past week. Mayville volleyball looked like an entirely different team… and they played like one as well.
There is something nerve-wracking about playing a team you haven't beat since 1985. This showed in the beginning of the set. The Comets played timidly, but slowly brought themselves together to stay in the game. They lost 17-25, but the nerves subsided and they were ready to play their game.
The following set was a point for point blood bath. Jamestown was aggressive in their offense, but it was nothing Mayville couldn't handle. The Comets fired back their weapons and stayed in the game.
Jen Puncochar earned 13 total kills, followed by
Remington Werner with 6 and
Joely Christiansen with 5; with a steady offense,
Megan Kolness was able to rack up 28 assists. The fight was obvious, but Mayville lost the second and third sets 23-25 each.
The Comets lost the match 0-3, but the capabilities they revealed were much louder than the match itself. Jamestown is a tough team, but the Comets showed themselves that they can compete with the toughest teams and are excited to take them on again.
