The Comets Women's Basketball team traveled to Iowa looking to keep an unblemished record in the NSAA by taking on the Waldorf Warriors. Mayville State weathered 3 quarters of hot shooting by Waldorf and scraped out a 76-71 victory.
Waldorf connected on their first four shots from deep and sprinted out to a 23-14 lead, but the Comets scored the last five points of the quarter to trim the lead to four. The second quarter followed a similar script, with Waldorf stretched their lead early and Mayville State fought back. At halfime, the Warriors held on to a 41-35 lead. Waldorf hitting 8/16 from 3 point land was the key. The Comets came out of halftime on a mission, outscoring Waldorf 17-5 to take a six point lead. It was Waldorf's turn to fight back, as they knotted the score at 54. No team gained much of an advantage in the fourth quarter, as there wree four lead changes and four ties. With 34 seconds left, the Warriors scored to lead 71-70.
Liza Hoglo hit a layup to go up one. then a half court trap by
Kendra Heier and
Joelle Ertl led to a Waldorf turnover. Ertl and
Karleigh Weber hit free throws with the game on the line to win 76-71. Mayville State hit 12/15 from the charity stripe and outrebounded Waldorf 46-34
Andi Gayner led all scorers with 28 and also hauled down 8 rebounds. Hoglo contributed 15 points, 8 assists and 4 steals, while Ertl matched Hoglo in points and steals while adding 7 assists of her own. Heier knocked down three 3 points en route to 11 points, and Weber led the team with 9 rebounds.
The win raises the Comets record to 11-5, 3-0 in the NSAA. Mayville State has one game next week against Trinity Bible on Wednesday January 13th.
