Box Score The Comets Men's Basketball team looked to extend their win streak to three when they hosted Dickinson State on Wednesday. The game featured strong defense by both teams, but the Comets were able to pull out a 59-56 victory.
The Comets opened with consecutive 3 pointers, but were unable to keep the hot shooting going. Neither team could gain much of an advantage, as the biggest lead in the half was only four points. Mayville shot 31% for the first half and Dickinson 40%, but the Comets converted 5/6 free throws while the Bluehawks misfired on all of their first half attempts and took the lead 26-22. The second half took a similar tone, as neither team could manage a run that would distance itself. The Comets held a slim lead throughout the second half, but the Bluehawks took a one point lead with under a minute left.
Jamal Branco converted a layup with 8 seconds to go and full court pressure led to a Bluehawk turnover.
A.B. Najee hit two clutch free throws and the Comets claimed their 11th win of the season, 59-56.
Branco led the Comets in scoring with 17, followed by
Chuck Robinson with 15 points and 3 blocks.
Darnell Landon added 11 and
Jordan Villebrun pulled down 13 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.
Sam Fields Jr. notched a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, Curtis Redd and Julian Vasquez each scored 12, Stephon Dafney added 4 assists and 3 steals, and Brandon Jamar blocked 3 shots.
The win boosts the Comets record to 11-7. Mayville State is on the road Sunday to face the Jamestown Jimmies.
