Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball team hosted the #18 Dickinson State Bluehawks in a crucial NSAA contest. The game featured 20 lead changes, 8 ties, and required overtime before the Bluehawks escaped with an 82-76 win.
The Comets were unable to keep the Bluehawks off the offensive glass in the first quarter, as Dickinson corralled nine offensive rebounds to open up a 16-12 lead after 10 minutes. Both defenses continued to lock down, as the Comets shot 33% in the first half and the Bluehawks shot 23%. At halftime,the Comets only trailed by 1, 24-23. The Bluehawks stretched the lead to five with 6 minutes left, but the Comets responded with a 10-2 run to take the lead 43-42. The game remained close throughout the fourth quarter, and with 17 seconds left, the Comets clung to a four point lead. However, Dickinson's Taylor Henningsgard converted two layups in the closing seconds to tie the game and force overtime. Foul trouble ate into the depth of the Comets, as three starters fouled out. The Bluehawks capitalized by going 6/8 from the line to seal the win 82-76.Â
Andi Gayner led the Comets with 22 points and 7 rebounds, followed by
Jenna Lundon with 15,
Joelle Ertl with 13 points and 8 rebounds, and
Liza Hoglo added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
For the Bluehawks, Lorna Shephard tallied 17 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists, Janniqua Thomas scored 16, Megan Klein contributed 12 points, 14 rebounds and 3 blocks, Henningsgard added 12 points and 5 assists, and Leslie Beaudoin chipped in 11.
The Comets record now stands at 12-6, 3-1 in conference. Mayville State will travel to Jamestown on Sunday to battle the #12 Jimmies.
