The Comets Women's Basketball team traveled to Jamestown Sunday to face their second consecutive ranked opponent, this time the #12 Jamestown Jimmies. Nothing went right for the Comets, as a combination of 23 turnovers and only 3 triples made led to a 93-66 defeat.
Mayville sprinted out to a 10-4 lead, but Jamestown rallied to tie and then scored the last nine points of the quarter to take an early 23-14 lead. The Jimmies streatched the lead into double digits with continued hot shooting and ended the half ahead 43-29. Things fell apart in the third quarter, as Jamestown scored on 10 of 11 possessions on a 25-2 run and led after 3 quarters 80-47. Both benches received plenty of playing time in the fourth, and the Comets were able to outscore Jamestown 19-13 but it was not nearly enough in a 93-66 defeat. The Comets only attempted 9 3 point attempts, down almost 20 from their average. The Jimmies shot 51% overall and grabbed 15 offensive rebounds, so there were few possessions where they didn't score.
Andi Gayner led the Comets with 23 points, followed by
Liza Hoglo with 14 and
Joelle Ertl with 11 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.
The loss drops the Comets record to 12-7. Mayville State hosts Presentation College on Wednesday January 27th.
