So Nice They Played Twice: Comets MBB Edge Presenation in 2OT

Box Score The Comets Men's Basketball team hosted the Presentation Saints in a crucial NSAA contest. It took two overtimes, but the Comets prevailed 83-81 in a thriller.

Mayville got out to an early 14-6 lead, but the Saints battled back with 3 pointers to tie the game at 17 eight minutes in. Neither team would hold a lead greater than four points the rest of the half, and after 20 minutes Presentation held a slim 41-38 lead. Both teams shot 53% from the field and collected 12 rebounds apiece, so the statistics were as tight as the score. The Saints ambushed the Comets to open the second half, scoring the first 11 points to break out to a 52-38 lead. The Comets slowly chipped away at the end and with 4:41 to go knotted the game at 66. Neither team would give an inch of ground and when the horn sounded, we were going to overtime tied at 70.

Points were hard to come by in OT #1, as both teams defenses dug in once again. Kiree Robinson for the Comets scored all of Mayville's points while Donnell Minton was the Saints' answer. Minton's layup with seconds to go drew the teams even once again, this time at 76. Even in double OT, both team's defensive efforts were outstanding. With 13 seconds left, Robinson connected on a driving layup to put the Comets up 1. Minton launched a 3 pointer for the lead but was unable to connect. Terrance Lockett added a free throw with 2 seconds left and the Comets escaped with the 83-81 win.

Robinson led all scorers with a career high 29 points on 11/15 from the field. Darnell Landon followed with 19 points, Chuck Robinson stuffed the box score with 10 points, 14 boards, 5 assists and 2 blocks, and Jamal Branco handed out 6 assists.

The Saints were led in scoring by Louis Cox with 22, followed by Frank Cimino with 16, and Minton and Tre Erby each recorded 15.

The Comets now stand at 12-8 overall, and start a 3 game road trip in South Dakota against the Dakota State Trojans on Saturday.
