The Comets Men's Basketball team looked to continue their hot streak when they faced the Dakota State Trojans. Mayville State jumped out to a halftime lead and held off a Trojan charge, winning 68-58.
Turnovers plagued both teams in the first half, as the Comets had issues early but strong shooting kept the game close. Mayville State broke open the game when they forced the Trojans into a turnover flurry of their own, ripping off a 14-2 run over a six minute span, bumping their lead into double digits. The Comets were able to maintain this lead going into the half 36-23. Mayville State shot 55% in the first half while holding the Trojans to only 30% on their home floor. Turnovers continued to be a problem for the Comets, as a string of five straight allowed Dakota State to trim the lead to 6 points. However, the Comets would never permit the Trojans to get the margin to one possession, and hit their free throws a the end to win 68-58. Although 19 turnovers are too many, shooting 53% from the field and outrebounding your opponent 41-29 is more than enough to overcome that.
Chuck Robinson led the way with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. A.B.Najee went 5/6 from the field with 4 3 pointers to score 14 and
Darnell Landon chipped in 12 points and 3 steals.
The Comets now stand at 13-8 overall, 3-5 NSAA. Mayville State travels to Valley City on Wednesday for a huge game against the #21 Vikings.
