The Comets Women's basketball team traveled to Dakota State in search of their 14th win of the season. They not only got it, but became a part of NSAA history by winning the highest-scoring game in conference history 109-101.
The Comets were aggressive to the rim from the opening tip, and the officials were calling the game tight. This led to a parade to the free throw line, as the Comets went 13 of 16 from the stripe in the first quarter alone. The Comets scored 27 points in the first quarter without attempting a single 3 point shot, and yet only held a 27-25 lead as the Trojans also made hay from the line going 8/8. As the Trojans started to pack the paint, the Comets started hitting from the outside. Mayville shot 9/15 from the field in the second quarter, but Dakota State shot just as well and by halftime the score was 52-48. The Comets were able to gain a little breathing room in the third, slowly stretching their lead out to 10 points before settling for a 79-71 lead after three quarters. Despite all of the Trojan's efforts, the Comets were able to maintain their lead between 8 and 11 points. The final four minutes featured Dakota State being force to foul to get the ball back. The Comets went 15/18 from the line in the final quarter to keep the game out of reach despite Dakota State knocking down four treys in the last 1:16 as the Comets finish the Trojans off 109-101. For the game, the Comets shot 63% overall, 57% from deep and connected on 37/46 free throws. Mayville State dominated the boards 36-24 and also dished out 21 assists.
Liza Hoglo had another outstanding game, pouring in 28 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and handing out 7 assists.
Joelle Ertl was close behind with 26 points and 6 assists, while
Jenna Lundon added 19 and
Andi Gayner recording 18.
The win boosts the Comets record to 14-7, 5-2 in conference. Mayville State heads to Valley City to take on the Vikings on Wednesday, February 3rd.
