Comets WBB Sharpshooting Pace Wins over Ashford and Clarke

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Comets Women's Basketball team hosted the Ashford Saints and Clarke Crusaders in their first games back from break. Mayville State is third in the nation in 3-pointers made per game this season, and that trend continued they poured in 27 treys in a pair of wins.

On Sunday, they battled the Ashford Saints. In a repeat of their December matchup, possessions were at a premium as both teams chewed up the shot clock before firing a shot. Ashford started slow, but scored the last six points of the quarter to take a slim 12-11 after one. Ashford continued to hound the Comets on defense and were able to hit some baskets in the second quarter, stretching their lead to 30-24 at half. Mayville State's 3 point barrage started in the third quarter, when they went 8/12 from deep to storm back and take a 52-42 lead. The Saints tried to mount numerous comebacks in the fourth, but the Comets stymied each one of them to take home a 68-62 win, The Comets started 2/11 from three point land but hit 10/21 in the second half. Free throw shooting was key, especially in the fourth, and Mayville State went 16 for 18 for the game to seal the win.

Karleigh Weber drained five 3's on her way to a new career high with 17, which led the Comet attack. Liza Hoglo filled up the box score with 12 ponts, 12 rebounds and 6 assists. Jenna Lundon also had 12 points and Andi Gayner finished with 11. 

The hot shooting carried over into today's game against the Clarke Crusaders. Lundon and Gayner nailed 3 pointers to get the Comets rolling, and never trailed in the game. Mayville State hit 8/14 from deep to jump out to a 41-28 lead at halftime. Somehow the shooting got even better in the second half, as the Comets shot a scorching 64% from the field and cruised to a 78-55 victory. For the game, the Comets shot 56% overall and an even 60% from 3 point land. The defense was just as effective, holding Clarke to only 34% shooting and 55 points.

Lundon was in a zone, connecting on 7 of 8 3 pointers and scoring 24 overall to lead the Comets. Hoglo added another double-double to her accomplishments with 20 points and 10 boards plus 7 assists and 3 steals, Gayner chipped in 13 and Joelle Ertl contributed 12 points and 5 assists.

The Comets are now 10-5 on the season, and are back on the road as they take on NSAA foe Waldorf on Saturday January 9th.
