Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball Team opened their season at home against the University of Winnipeg. Even while incorporating nine new players into the roster, the Comets took an early lead and rolled to an 88-73 victory.
Winnipeg got out to a 6-4 lead, but the Comets scored the next nine points to take an early lead, and ended the first quarter up 20-17. Mayville State maintained a small lead throughout the second quarter, then the Comets went on an 8-0 run to finish the half to expand the lead to 45-33. The lead stayed in double digits in the third quarter, then the Comets went cold, not making a field goal for the last five minutes of the quarter. Winnipeg used this to go on a 12-2 run of their own to cut the lead to 61-57 with ten minutes left in the game. Winnipeg could never take the lead, and foul trouble impacted their depth later in the fourth. Mayville State finished the game on a 13-4 spurt to finish strong, making the final score 88-73.
Joelle Ertl led all scorers with 20 points and also contributed 6 assists.
Andi Gayner opened the season with a double-double, scoring 18 points, grabbing 11 rebounds and collecting 4 steals.
Naomi Torgerson also reached double figures with 14 points and added 4 steals and
Andrea Skillingstad blocked 4 shots.
The Comets now stand at 1-0. Mayville State continues their homestand this weekend with games against Brandon University and Briar Cliff.
