Comets WBB Split Weekend Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Comets Women's Basketball team hosted Brandon University and #15 Briar Cliff University over the weekend. After winning Saturday's tilt over Brandon, the Comets dropped their contest against Briar Cliff.

Against the Bobcats, the combination of a full court press and the injury to point guard Joelle Ertl resulted in Mayville State committing 11 1st quarter turnovers and a deficit of 21-12. The young Comets started to settle down and force some turnovers of their own, managing to chop the deficit from nine to five. The second half opened with the Comets forcing Brandon into turnovers in their first three possessions, which Mayville State converted into seven points to take back the lead. The Comets added another 6-0 burst later in the quarter, and with ten minutes to go were up 56-48. Mayville State started the fourth quarter and quickly boosted the lead to 15 points. The Bobcats ate into that deficit, but in the end the Comets prevailed 81-73. After the first quarter, the Comets only committed eight more turnovers in the game while forcing Brandon into 24 of their own.

Claire Blascziek poured in 26 points off the bench and added five steals. Naomi Torgerson filled up the box score with 23 points, 9 rebounds, 9 steals(!), 4 assists and 3 blocks. Andi Gayner recorded 11 points and seven boards, and Karleigh Weber reached double figures with 10.

On Sunday, the Comets were looking to upset the nationally ranked Chargers. Mayville State jumped out to an early 11-2 lead, but the Chargers chipped away and cut the deficit to 15-12 after 10 minutes. In the second quarter, both teams played even for the most part but the Comets hit some free throws late to raise their lead to 32-26 at halftime. Turnovers plagued the Comets once again, as they recorded 16 in the first half, but minimized the damage by holding the Chargers to 35.3% shooting. The second half opened with Mayville State expanding the lead to 11, but then Briar Cliff stormed back with a 16-0 run to take the lead. The Chargers were able to add to that lead by the end of the third to 56-48. The fouls started to pile up for Briar Cliff in the fourth, as free throws got the Comets back to within a possession of tying the game, but the Chargers were able to respond after each run and grinded out a 71-63 win. Keys to the Chargers win were shooting 51.5% in the second half and forcing 28 Comet turnovers.

Gayner led all scorers with 21 points and four steals. Weber added 14, and Torgerson finished with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The split runs the Comets record to 2-1 for the year. Mayville State hits the road next weekend for two games in Iowa, Friday against Dordt College and Saturday against Northwestern College.
