Defense Propels Comets MBB to 3-0 Week

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 The Comets hosted GPAC foe Mount Marty on Wednesday, then took on Emmaus Bible College on Friday and Saturday. The Comets only allowed 57 points per game enroute to sweeping both opponents.

The Lancers started hot and jumped out to a 12-2 lead. The Comets were able to clamp down on defense and eventually tie the game at 19 with just over 7 mintues to go. Mayville State continued their strong play and finished the half with a 16-6 run to lead by 10 at halftime 35-25. The Lancers were able to cut the lead to five early in the second half, but the Comets responded by scoring the next nine points to boost the lead to 50-36. Mount Marty slowly picked away at the lead and with two minutes left took the lead at 63-62. Conor Quinn hit a triple and Creighton Pfau added a bucket, and the Comets finished off the 67-63 victory. Daniel Lindgren led the Comets with 13 points and Garek Droog added a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

On Friday, the Comets battled the Emmaus Eagles. The Eagles took an early 8-6 lead, but then the Comets scored the next 12 points to take a lead they would never relinquish. At halftime Mayville State led 34-16. The Comets held the Eagles to only 22% from the field in the first half. Everybody got to play in the second half as the Comets upped the lead to over 30 points halfway through the second half as they cruised to a 73-40 win. Once again, the Comets played tough defense (30% shooting for the Eagles) without fouling as the Eagles only attempted two free throws. Twelve Comets scored in the game, once again led by Lindgren with 15 points, followed by Ben Maranan and Max Cooper with nine apiece. Conor Quinn hauled down 10 rebounds from the point guard position.

The Comets and Eagles played again on Saturday afternoon. Emmaus stayed with the Comets for the first ten minutes and only trailed by three, 18-15. Mayville State then went on a 13-2 run to bump up the lead to double digits. The Comets went into the locker room with a 47-30 halftime lead. Eleven turnovers led to some easier points for the Eagles, but hit five triples to make up the difference. The Comets got the lead in the twenties early in the second half and maintained that pace throughout. Once again, everybody got some minutes in the second half and 11 Comets reached the scoring column in the 89-68 win. Pfau led the Comets with a career high 20, followed closely by Aidan Quinn with 19 (6-8 from the field) and Lindgren finished with 15. Eric Staebler pulled down nine rebounds as well.

The Comets record is now 5-1. Mayville State is back in action on Thursday 11/17 against Minnesota-Morris, tipoff at 730 pm at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse.
