Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball team returned home on Thursday to face the University of Minnesota Morris Cougars. The Comets forced 27 turnovers and the Cougars to under 55 points in a 66-53 victory.
The Comets came out with a defensive mentality from the opening tip, as the first six Cougar possessions resulted in turnovers, allowing the Comets to sprint out to an 8-0 lead. Mayville State continued with the pressure, ultimately forcing 11 turnovers in the first quarter to lead 18-5 after 10 minutes.The Cougars settled down in the second quarter as the teams played relatively even, with the Comets go into halftime ahead 29-18. Andi Gayner, whose nine points helped boost the lead to 43-27. However, Morris used an 11-2 run to finish the third quarter down only 7 points at 45-38. The Cougars cut the deficit to four points before the Comets ripped off a decisive 13-2 spurt and finished off the win 66-53. Not only did Mayville State force all those turnovers, they did it without fouling as the Cougars only attempted nine free throws.
Gayner led all scores with 26 points and also added 3 steals.
Naomi Torgerson finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds and 4 steals, and
Claire Blascziek reached double figures with 14 and recorded 6 steals.
The Comets go into Thanksgiving with a 3-3 record, and will open conference play on December 2nd at home against Valley City State.
