Comets VB Finish Regular Season, Open NSAA Against #3 Viterbo

The Comets Volleyball team wrapped up their regular season on the road against the #23 Jamestown Jimmies and Dickinson State Blue Hawks. The Comets played well, but not well enough in dropping both matches.

On Friday, Mayville State battled the Jimmies. The Comets were able to grind out a small lead midway through the set at 17-13, but Jamestown finished with a 12-3 burst to take control and win set one 25-20. In set two, the Jimmies raced out to a 14-6 and looked ready to cruise to another win, but the Comets closed to within 21-18 before succumbing 25-20. In set three, Jamestown grabbed a small lead early and managed to hold on to it throughout the match, finally winning 25-21. It was the Comets strongest work at the net all season, as they finished with a .338 hitting percentage. Megan Kolness filled the box score with nine kills and 23 assists, and Sydney Boom recorded two service aces.

The Comets traveled to Dickinson Saturday to take on the Blue Hawks. In set one, the Comets and Blue Hawks were tied at 14, then things fell apart as the Blue Hawks blew up with an 11-1 run to win 25-15. Set two started the way set one finished, as Dickinson raced out to an 8-2 lead. However, the Comets did not give up, and came back to knot the game at 18. The rest of the set was nip and tuck, with the Blue Hawks escaping with a 25-23 victory. Set three was close throughout, but this the Comets made the plays down the stretch and were able to take the set 25-22. Set four followed set three's pattern, as neither team could establish a significant advantage. However, Dickinson avoided a fifth set by scoring five of the last seven points to take the match 25-21. Stephany Wold led the Comets with 13 kills, followed by Joely Christianson with 10. Kolness racked up 33 assists and TaLise Hansen added 22 digs.

The Comets finished the regular season with a record of 11-25 and will travel to #3 Viterbo on Tuesday night for the opening round of the NSAA tournament.
