Comets MBB Split Against Oak Hills and #4 Briar Cliff

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Comets Men's Basketball team took on Oak Hills Christian College and #4 Briar Cliff. The Comets defense shut down Oak Hills but could not slow down the Chargers attack on Saturday.

The Comets hosted the Wolfpack on Tuesday evening. Mayville State's defense was on point from the beginning, as the Comets jumped out to a 25-10 lead in the first 13 minutes of the half. The teams played relatively even the rest of the way and the Comets went into the locker room with a 38-21 advantage. The Comets held the Wolfpack to only 34% shooting while forcing 10 turnovers. Mayville State slowly stretched out their lead in the second half, but 11 turnovers prevented the Comets from blowing the game wide open. The defense did not relent however, as they harassed the Wolfpack to 28% shooting in the second half and won going away 67-41. The Comets played fantastic defense and did it without fouling, as the Wolfpack did not attempt one free throw attempt in the entire game!  Ben Maranan came off the bench to score 14 points to lead the Comets, while Garek Droog also hit double figures with 10. Creighton Pfau grabbed nine rebounds and added three steals.

On Saturday the Comets traveled to Iowa to take on the #4 ranked Chargers. The Chargers came in averaging 97.5 points per game, so the Comets defense had its hands full. The Comets stayed with the Chargers and were within one point at 19-18 10 minutes in. Briar Cliff then went on a 13-2 burst to open up a double digit lead. The Chargers offense erupted for 34 points in the final 10 minutes to lead 53-30 at half. 13 turnovers in the first half hurt the Comets in particular. In the second half the Comets were able to corral the Chargers offense somewhat, allowing only 35 points in the second half. But the Chargers defense limited to Comets to only 30 points, making the final score 88-60. Daniel Lindgren scored 11 points to lead the Comets and Droog added seven rebounds.

The split gives the Comets a 2-1 record. Mayville State hosts Mount Marty this coming Wednesday, tipoff is at 600pm.
