Comets WBB Drop Two in Iowa

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The Comets Women's Basketball team traveled to Iowa to take on the Dordt Defenders and the Northwestern Raiders. In particular, the Comets were unable to get going from the three point line which contributed to two defeats.

On Friday Mayville State battled Dordt. The Comets were able to get a couple early buckets, but the Defenders went on a 17-2 run to quickly open up a double digit lead. The Comets trimmed that lead to five by the end of the quarter by scoring the next six points. In the second quarter Dordt were able to maintain a four to eight point lead throughout, then kept the Comets scoreless for the last three minutes to lead at halftime 34-22. Neither team shot particularly well in the first half, as Mayville State connected on 35% of its field goal attempts while the Defenders shot 41%. Dordt's Paige Embers caught fire in the third, scoring 11 points while the Comets stayed cold, and the Defenders expanded their lead to 58-33 with ten minutes left. Mayville's offense was not able to get going in the fourth quarter and weren't able to cut into that deficit at all, as Dordt finished with a 71-47 win. The Comets only shot 27% in the second half, including only 1/13 from deep. Andi Gayner led the Comets with 18 points and eight rebounds, followed by Karleigh Weber with 12 points and four steals.

Mayville State looked to get the offense humming against Northwestern on Saturday. Juniors Gayner and Weber each scored six points in the first quarter and The Comets jumped out to a 19-16 lead after 10 minutes. Mayville State was able to sustain a small lead to start the second quarter, but the Raiders held The Comets to only four points in the last six minutes, turning a small deficit into an 11 point lead going into halftime 41-30. Turnovers hurt the Comets in the second quarter, as they committed nine to Northwestern's one. The third quarter played about as even as possible, with both teams scoring 15 points, leaving the Comets a 56-45 deficit to overcome in the fourth. Unfortunately, the Comets went ice cold to start the fourth as Northwestern poured in the first 19 points of the quarter to put the game away, ultimately winning 82-62. Mayville State were only able to hit 3 of 19 from the three point line, which never gave them a chance to get a run started or to stifle a run by the Raiders. Andrea Skillingstad collected the first double double of her career, scoring 14 points and hauling down 10 rebounds. Gayner also reached 14 points and Weber finished with 12.

The Comets record now stands at 2-3. Mayville State will next host the University of Minnesota at Morris on Thursday, November 17th.
