Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball opened their NSAA schedule by hosting the Valley City State Vikings. After a cold start, Mayville State battled back to have a shot at sending the game into overtime, but fell short in a 59-56 defeat.
The first quarter was one the Comets would like to forget on both offense and defense. Offensively the Comets only connected on 4/17 shots and misfired on all five 3-point attempts. On defense, Valley City State collected five offensive rebound to extend possessions. This combination resulted in a 20-11 Viking lead after 10 minutes. The Vikings continued to apply pressure as they scored the first six points of the second to boost the lead to 26-11. Mayville State used a 7-0 run late in the second to chop the lead to 34-35 at half. Neither team gained an advantage in the third, and the Comets went into the fourth quarter trailing 49-41. Mayville State scored the first seven points of the quarter to pull within a point, and the Vikings countered by scoring the next six points. The Comets chipped away at this lead but could never retake it. With eight seconds left, the Comets
Claire Blascziek pulled off a three point play and swiped the Vikings inbounds pass, giving the Comets a shot at overtime. The resulting three pointer missed the mark, and Valley City held on for the 59-56 victory.Â
