Box Score The Comets Women's Basketball team returned after a three game road trip looking to sweep the Dakota State Trojans. The Trojans shot well from everywhere, leading to an 88-78 victory.
The Trojans offense was clicking from the start, as they hit 50% from the field in the first quarter, including four from deep to take a 25-18 first quarter lead. The Comets stayed in the game by hitting the offensive boards hard for multiple 2nd chance opportunities. Led by
Andi Gayner's 12 points and 7 rebounds, and chipped their deficit down to four by halftime, 43-39. Mayville State opened with four consecutive three pointers to take a slim lead, and the teams battled for the lead the rest of the third quarter. With 10 minutes left, the game was knotted at 61. The Trojans dominated the first five minutes of the fourth, outscoring the Comets 10-1 to grab a 71-62 lead. Mayville State pulled to within a basket with 94 seconds to go, Kendra Lindblad nailed a clutch three on Dakota State's next possession, then the Trojans hit 10 consecutive free throws to seal the 88-78 victory. Dakota State shot 54% from the field and 94% from the line, which proved to be the decisive advantage.
Gayner led the Comet attack with 20 points and 11 rebounds, followed by
Karleigh Weber with 15,
Jenna Lundon with 14 points and 4 steals and
Liza Hoglo with 11.
Joelle Ertl also added 6 assists.
BreeAna Olson earned scoring honors with 23 points, 3 blocks and 2 steals. Sharee Galbraith added 19 points and 9 rebounds, Courtney Hulstein scored 17, Lindblad chipped in 11, and Kelsey Little finished with 10.
The Comets record now stands at 14-10, 5-5 in conference. Mayville State hits the road for the last time Saturday against Presenation.
