The Comets Women's Basketball team finished the road portion of their schedule with a much needed win over the Presentation Saints,75-69. The Comets delivered a decisive 16-1 run in the second half, then withstood a 10/15 performance from the 3 point line enroute to their 15th win of the season.
The first quarter featured plenty of offense, five ties and nine lead changes. After 10 minutes, Mayville State held a slim 22-20 lead. The Comets scored the first six points of the second quarter to gaina little breathing room, only to see the Saints battle back to within a basket at halftime, 35-33. More lead changes and ties were in store for the third quarter, but the Comets ripped off an 8-0 run in the last two minutes to go up 62-53. The run continued into the fourth, as Mayville finished off a 16-1 run to go up 70-54 with just under seven minutes left. The Saints produced a flurry of threes, but the Comets made just enough free throws to keep the game from getting TOO close, and won 75-69. The Comets got to the line 32 times compared to 15 for the Saints, and Mayville forced 17 turnovers while only committing 12.Â
Andi Gayner had her second consecutive 20+ point outing with 21 while collecting 7 rebounds.
Jenna Lundon scored 19,
Liza Hoglo added 14 points and 3 steals, and
Joelle Ertl chipped in 11.
The Comets are now 15-10 overall, 6-5 in the NSAA. Mayville State finishes the regular season next week with home games against Valley City on Wednesday and Jamestown on Saturday.
